Florida: Plot to Attack New York Stock Exchange with IED Foiled, 1 Arrested

On 20 November 2024, a 30-year-old Florida man was arrested after FBI agents discovered his alleged plot to function an IED at the New York Stock Exchange in New York the week before Thanksgiving. The suspect reportedly tasked an FBI undercover agent with procuring explosives to use in an IED. The IED would include a “remote-trigger” he constructed out of two-way radios. The FBI began investigating the suspect in February 2024 after receiving a tip that he was storing bomb-making instructions in a storage unit.

Florida: IEDs Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 19 November 2024, Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) deputies discovered 2 IEDs, 28 pounds of cannabis, and 3 firearms while executing a narcotics-related search warrant at a residence on Burning Ember Lane in Palm Coast. FCSO deputies called the St. John's County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad to assist, and bomb technicians took possession of the devices. No additional details on the devices were provided. A 51-year-old male suspect was arrested. The ATF is assisting in analyzing the devices, and the investigation is ongoing.

Florida: Non-Functional Pipe Bomb Discovered at Airport Industrial Park, 1 Arrested

On 13 November 2024, at approximately 1400 hours local time, Highlands County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded after a non-functional pipe bomb, described as a metal pipe with a closed bottom and removable threaded top, was discovered in a tool cabinet assigned to a 37-year-old employee of a manufacturing company at Sebring Regional Airport Industrial Park in Sebring. A bomb technician from the State Fire Marshal’s Office inspected the device and stated that the device did not contain any explosive material but had the characteristics of an IED.

Florida: Pipe Bomb and BMM Found in Home, 2 Arrested

On 13 November 2024, media reports indicated that Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies arrested two suspects after executing an outstanding warrant at a residence on the 6400 block of Southeast Lockerby Place in Hobe Sound. MCSO deputies discovered a pipe bomb and bomb-making material (BMM) used to construct the pipe bomb, including exploding target material, ball bearings, and PVC pipe in the residence. Deputies also found multiple firearms in the home, some of which had visible drill marks and altered switches.

Tennessee: Plot to Damage Electric Substation with IED Attached to UAS Foiled, 1 Arrested

On 2 November 2024, federal authorities arrested a 24-year-old man while he was allegedly attempting to target an electric substation in Nashville using an IED attached to an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). According to the U.S. Department of Justice press release, officers arrested the suspect as the UAS was powered on and the IED was armed sitting next to the UAS. In September 2024, the suspect discussed a plan to fly a UAS with an IED attached to it into an electric substation with FBI undercover employees (UCEs).

Tennessee: Explosive Device Emplaced Under Car

On 3 November 2024, at approximately 1215 hours local time, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to a home on the 400 block of Shadden Road in Tellico Plains following a report about a suspicious device that was found under a vehicle. MCSO deputies identified the device as an explosive device and called the Knox County Bomb Squad for assistance. Bomb squad technicians examined the device and rendered it safe. No injuries were reported. No further device details were provided. The ATF is leading the ongoing investigation.

Mississippi: Explosive Device Found Following Altercation

On 17 October 2024, at approximately 1330 hours local time, Clarke County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a residential area near Basstown Road in Stonewall for reports of an altercation. One person was injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. At the scene, deputies discovered a suspected explosive device and weapons and called the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, and Mississippi Office of Homeland Security for assistance.

Tennessee: Explosives Found in Recycling Facility

On 10 October 2024, at approximately 1414 hours local time, Knoxville Police Department officers and Knoxville Fire Department crews responded to a recycling facility on the 2700 block of Mynderse Avenue in Knoxville after an employee discovered a steel box outside the plant that was emitting smoke. Knoxville Police Department Bomb Squad technicians used an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to examine the contents of the box, described as a “5x5 steel box” that they believed contained dynamite. The surrounding area was evacuated while authorities examined the box’s contents.

Alabama: 2 IEDs Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 14 October 2024, Atmore Police Department (APD) officers responded to a home on the 200 block of Pleasant Hill Circle in Atmore and spoke with a 34-year-old man who was upset about personal issues and made several concerning statements. Officers conducted a follow-up investigation on 15 October and learned that the man may have constructed IEDs, had previously served as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician in the military, and reportedly suffered from PTSD.

Florida: 2 IEDs Found in Casino

On 29 September 2024, at approximately 1159 hours local time, an IED described as a “crude concealed device with fireworks components” was found in a men’s room near a casino in Tampa, prompting the response of the Seminole Police Department and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Bomb Disposal Team. Bomb technicians rendered safe the device and removed it from the premises. Authorities continued the investigation while the casino was reopened, and on 30 September, they discovered a second similar device in a different men’s room in the casino’s mezzanine area.
