North Carolina: Explosive Device Functioned in Retirement Home, 1 Arrested

On 20 August 2024, at approximately 0230 hours local time, Charlotte Fire Department crews responded to a retirement home on Dr. Carver Road after a 76-year-old male suspect used an unspecified explosive device to set fire to the building, which was extinguished by the sprinkler system. The building sustained approximately $15,000 of damages. No further device details were reported.

Tennessee: IID Thrown at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 11 August 2024, at approximately 2215 hours local time, Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers responded to a residence on the 1000 block of Kney Street for reports of a fire. The resident reported that their neighbor threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail composed of a lit soda-pop bottle, onto their porch. The IID ignited a blaze that the victim quickly extinguished. MPD officers arrested the 25-year-old female suspect at the scene, and she is facing aggravated arson charges. No further information was released.

Tennessee: Three IEDs Found in Residence During Drug Bust, 1 Arrested

On 7 August 2024, law enforcement officers with the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force served a search warrant at a residence and storage unit in the 200 block of Kenneth Street in Athens. During the search, authorities discovered 3 IEDs; 41 firearms, of which four had been reported stolen; approximately 540 grams of methamphetamine; drug paraphernalia; and more than $40,000 in cash. ATF agents responded to the scene and removed the IEDs. No further device details were released.

South Carolina: Pipe Bomb, Drugs, and Counterfeit Money Found at Gas Station, 1 Arrested

On 12 August 2024, at approximately 1530 hours local time, Anderson Police Department officers responded to a gas station on the 1500 block of Pearman Dairy Road for a wellness check. After discovering a man with drugs and counterfeit money, officers searched his vehicle and discovered what appeared to be explosive materials. Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad technicians were called to the scene and removed an IED described as a pipe bomb from the vehicle. During a search of the suspect’s home, authorities located currency printers and additional counterfeit money.

Georgia: Construction Equipment Set Ablaze with IIDs

On 14 August 2024, at approximately 0200 hours local time, Atlanta Police Department officers and Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department crews responded to a construction site on the 2000 block of Memorial Drive for reports of a fire. Local authorities, Georgia Bureau of Investigation detectives, ATF agents, DHS representatives, and FBI investigators examined the scene and determined that two suspects used three improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) to set fire to two pieces of construction equipment.

Florida: IID Thrown at Restaurant

On 13 August 2024, surveillance video captured a man throwing an improvised incendiary device (IID) at a restaurant on the 1400 block of N. Surf Road in Hollywood. Hollywood Police Department officers responded to the scene at approximately 0500 hours local time, where they discovered burn marks from the IID, described as a Molotov cocktail, but no further damage. The business appears to have been targeted by the same suspect in a June 2024 IID attack. No further details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Georgia: Man Brings IID to Former Employer

On 22 July 2024, Commerce Police Department officers discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, masks, bats, guns with homemade silencers, knives, and camouflage clothing in a vehicle belonging to a 36-year-old suspect at his former employer in Commerce after he returned for a second time to demand his job back. The suspect had originally entered the car dealership on 20 July to demand his job back, brandishing a gun and threatening an employee, but left the dealership before authorities arrived.

Alabama: IED Found in Bag, 2 Arrested

On 26 July 2024, Limestone County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputies encountered a man and a woman pushing a motorcycle along Zehner Road in Athens while investigating a report of a stolen motorcycle. Deputies attempted to contact the pair, but the suspects fled the scene, dropping two backpacks in the process. Deputies recovered the backpacks and discovered what they believed to be an IED inside one of them. The Huntsville Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene. Bomb squad technicians examined the device, confirmed it to be an IED, and rendered it safe.

Tennessee: Pyrotechnic Device Thrown into Gas Station, 2 Injured

On 15 July 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, a suspect was caught on CCTV approaching a gas station convenience store on the 3100 block of South Perkins Road in Memphis; pulling a pyrotechnic device out of his pocket, shown in a video as a cardboard tube with a fuse; lighting it; throwing it into the store; and fleeing the scene. Two employees were injured by the explosion, and material damages were estimated to be between $4,000 and $5,000. No further device details have been released. An investigation is ongoing.

South Carolina: Pipe Bomb Discovered in Burglary Suspects’ Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 14 July 2024, at approximately 1240 hours local time, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) deputies responded to a home in the 6100 block of Marmalade Lane in Aiken for a report of a burglary. At the scene, ACSO deputies located a black pickup truck identified by the complainant as being involved in the burglary. Two suspects, a 44-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, were arrested. Deputies searched the vehicle and discovered what they believed to be an IED described as pipe bomb inside a backpack, as well as a “makeshift cane gun” loaded with one round.
