Netherlands: Explosives Found in Scooter, 1 Arrested

On 22 July 2024, at approximately 1030 hours local time, local police responded to a bicycle shed in Amsterdam for reports of a suspicious scooter being found. Authorities removed the scooter from the bike shed and took it to the police station for further investigation, where they discovered a suspicious package in the scooter’s saddle. As a precaution, part of the police station was evacuated, and local explosives experts responded to assist.

Ireland: Woman Throws Pyrotechnic at Childcare Facility, 1 Arrested

On 23 July 2024, at approximately 1310 hours local time, local police responded to a childcare facility in South Dublin after a pyrotechnic device was thrown into the building. The children were moved to another part of the building, and no injuries were reported, but the building sustained smoke damage. No further device details were released. A 30-year-old female suspect was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released without charge pending the presentation of the case to prosecutors. The investigation is ongoing.

Michigan: IED Discovered During Traffic Stop, 2 Arrested

On 17 July 2024, at approximately 2240 hours local time, Wyandotte Police Department (WPD) officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a minor violation. Officers investigated the vehicle after the two male occupants made suspicious, inconsistent statements and discovered cocaine and an IED, pictured as a cylindrical device wrapped in duct tape with a green fuse protruding from it. WPD officers contacted the Dearborn Police Department Bomb Squad for assistance.

New York: Pipe Bomb and Machete Found in Vehicle, 2 Arrested

On 24 July 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers discovered a suspicious device in a vehicle near the NYPD 25th Precinct in East Harlem after one of the car’s two male occupants reported a domestic assault with a machete by the other occupant. NYPD officers recovered the machete, as well as an IED in the back seat. NYPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and examined the device, pictured as a pipe bomb attached to two hairspray bottles, before removing the device for further examination.

Texas: Pyrotechnic Device Functioned Outside of Home

On 5 July 2024, at approximately 0200 hours local time, a loud explosion was recorded outside of a home in a McAllen neighborhood. Doorbell camera footage captured what authorities believe was a pyrotechnic device functioning near a homeowner’s vehicle. Sparks from the explosion ignited a small fire on the house’s garage doorframe, which was quickly extinguished by the homeowner. McAllen Fire Department arson investigators responded to the scene to investigate the incident. No further device details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: Pipe Bomb Found by Magnet Fishing

On 20 July 2024, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of State Route 590 and Toussaint North Road for a reported explosive device found by magnet fisherman. Deputies determined that the object resembled a pipe bomb. Toledo Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and rendered the device safe.

Kansas: Suspect Throws Possible IED onto Porch, 1 Arrested

On 15 July 2024, at approximately 2030 hours local time, Atchison Police Department officers responded to the 1700 block of Chestnut Street after a 34-year-old man threw a wooden trunk, believed to contain an explosive device, onto the porch of a woman’s home, where the trunk exploded. Nearby items, including a mailbox, flowerpot, chair, and door, were damaged. No injuries were reported. No further device-related details were provided. The suspect allegedly threw the device from his vehicle following a verbal altercation with the woman.

Indiana: Pyrotechnic Device Damages “Little Library”

On 20 July 2024, at approximately 0024 hours local time, Highland Police Department officers responded to Brantwood Park after an unidentified suspect functioned a pyrotechnic device, destroying a “Little Library” book exchange stand and scattering debris and books across the surrounding area. Residents reported that two similar incidents recently occurred in the same location. No further device-related details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Hawaii: Brush Fire Ignited by IIDs

On 22 July 2024, at approximately 1645 hours local time, Kauai Fire Department crews and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife extinguished a brush fire in Waimea, above Panini Place. On 23 July, investigators discovered improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) near another fire on Poki'i Ridge, leading them to believe both fires were intentionally set. No injuries or structural damages were reported. In addition to these incidents, the cause of a 15 July wildfire in the nearby Hanapeepe-Kaumakani area remains under investigation.

Washington: IID Discovered on Knife-Wielding Man, 1 Arrested

On 14 July 2024, at approximately 2100 hours local time, a City of Olympia Parks employee at the intersection of Ethridge Avenue and Central Street Northeast encountered a man screaming and swinging a knife around. The man approached the employee’s vehicle and punched it and banged on the window with the knife. The employee drove away and saw the suspect go down an alleyway, which he reported to the Olympia Police Department (OPD). OPD officers responded, located the suspect in the alleyway, and arrested him after he shoved an officer.
