Michigan: Juveniles Function Pyrotechnic Device Indoors, 2 Injured

On 27 June 2024, at approximately 1700 hours local time, two 11-year-old girls functioned a pyrotechnic device at their home in River Rogue, resulting in serious injuries. The children discovered a pyrotechnic device in the house and, believing it to be a sparkler, lit it in a bathroom. After realizing the device was not a sparkler, they attempted to remove the device from the home; however, it functioned, severely injuring one girl’s hand and burning the other child.

Massachusetts: Explosive Devices Discovered at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 28 June 2024, at approximately 0800 hours local time, Haverhill Police Department (HPD) officers and Haverhill Fire Department crews responded to Rosebud Avenue after a woman informed HPD her husband had explosive devices in and around their home. Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit technicians responded to assist and disposed of three explosive devices and explosive material via controlled detonations. The 60-year-old male suspect was arrested after Massachusetts State Police officers pulled him over on Interstate 495 in Wrentham.

Massachusetts: Man Functions Explosive Device, Additional Devices and Weapons Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 2 July 2024, a 64-year-old man in North Andover allegedly functioned an unspecified explosive device that damaged two vehicles and then attempted to conceal the damage with spray paint. Later that day, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies searched the suspect's residence on Village Green Drive. At the residence, authorities discovered a cache of more than 30 weapons, large-capacity ammunition feeders, and additional homemade explosive devices. Many of the guns lacked serial numbers, and the suspect’s license to carry weapons expired in 2000.

Maine: IID Functioned on Train Tracks

On 6 July 2024, at approximately 1830 hours local time, authorities received reports that an improvised incendiary device (IID) described as a Molotov cocktail was functioned on the railroad tracks between Pleasant Street and the Maine Behavioral Health building in Rockland. The IID consisted of a gasoline-filled bottle with a burning cloth stuffed inside. The Rockland Police Department and Rockland Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. They also located a second similar IID, which had not been ignited, further west on the tracks.

Kansas: IEDs and Pyrotechnics Seized While Searching Home, 1 Arrested

On 26 June 2024, at approximately 1100 hours local time, the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) received an anonymous tip that pyrotechnic devices were being sold illegally at a business in the 3900 block of East Harry Street. WFD personnel and Wichita Police Department (WPD) officers responded to the business and discovered evidence of the illegal sale of pyrotechnic devices. WPD officers arrested a 64-year-old man at the scene for criminal use of explosives in connection with the incident.

California: 1,000 lb of Illegal Fireworks Recovered in Search, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, the Riverside Police Department, Riverside Fire Department Arson Investigations Unit, and State Fire Marshal’s Office agents discovered approximately 1,000 lb of pyrotechnics and 100 M-80 explosive devices while searching a residential property in the 5800 block of Clifton Avenue in Riverside. The bulk of the explosives were found on the backyard patio. A 23-year-old male suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of destructive devices, possession of unlicensed pyrotechnics, possession of an illicit firearm, and child endangerment.

California: Decomposing Dynamite and Blasting Caps Discovered on Property

On 1 July 2024, at approximately 1750 hours local time, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Indians Road in Janesville after individuals clearing out the home found explosives in an ice chest. Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Consolidated Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist, examined the explosives, determined they were sticks of dynamite in advanced stages of decomposition, and removed them from the scene via a robot and a blast container for disposal at a safe location.

California: Pipe Bomb and Additional Explosive Devices Discovered, 3 Arrested

On 3 July 2024, detectives with the Kern County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Rural Crime Investigation Unit discovered multiple IEDs, including one described as a pipe bomb, as well as bomb-making material (BMM), copper wiring, and tools for electrical wire theft while searching a home in the 8200 block of Halleluiah Street in southeast Bakersfield. Two male suspects, ages 26 and 32, and a 53-year-old female suspect were arrested. The Kern County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, Kern County Probation Department, and KCSO Lamont Substation assisted with the incident.

California: Non-Functional IED Emplaced Near Business, 1 Arrested

On 3 July 2024, at approximately 1006 hours local time, San Jose Police Department officers and bomb squad technicians responded to a bomb threat phone call at a business in the 1300 block of Ridder Park Drive and discovered an IED. Bomb squad technicians examined the device, determined it was “incomplete but viable,” and rendered the device safe. Officers arrested a 56-year-old male suspect.

California: IID and Pyrotechnics Thrown into Traffic, 1 Arrested

On 4 July 2024, at approximately 2100 hours local time, in a neighborhood near Heartland Drive and Tetotom Park Way in Antelope, several juveniles threw improvised incendiary devices (IID) described as Molotov cocktails and launched pyrotechnics described as aerial and mortar pyrotechnics into oncoming traffic. The suspects fled when the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to the scene. SCSO deputies detained several suspects, one of whom was found in possession of a handgun and was subsequently arrested.
