California: IID Functioned Under Police Car, 1 Arrested

On 1 June 2024, at approximately 0400 hours local time, an improvised incendiary device (IID) functioned under a UC Berkeley police car that was parked in front of the campus police station. The device was emplaced near the fuel tank, partially burning the police car when it functioned. The suspect believed responsible for the fire allegedly set three other fires—one on 13 June outside a campus building, a second on 16 June at a construction site on campus, and the third on 16 June on a campus hilltop.

California: 8,000 lb of Pyrotechnics and 5 Firearms Seized, 1 Arrested

On 20 June 2024, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Sacramento Metro Fire Department confiscated nearly 8,000 lb of illegal pyrotechnics, over $20,000 USD believed to be used in the purchase and sale of the pyrotechnics, and 5 firearms from a residence on Emory Court in South Sacramento. Police acted on an anonymous tip from a local resident, who alerted them to online advertisements for illegal pyrotechnics posted on social media. A 36-year-old man was arrested in connection to the crime.

California: Explosion at Homeless Encampment Fire Injures 11 Firefighters

On 24 June 2024, at approximately 1350 hours local time, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) firefighters responded to a homeless encampment at 15700 W. Burbank Blvd. in Van Nuys for a half-acre of burning grass. As crews arrived, unspecified materials involved in the fire exploded, injuring 10 firefighters and critically wounding 1. The Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad and LAFD Arson Division responded to assist, examined the scene, and discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade and suspicious devices described as cylindrical objects.

California: Explosive Devices Discovered During Raid on Home, 1 Arrested

On 26 June 2024, at approximately 0830 hours local time, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies found unspecified explosive devices, a cache of guns, suppressors, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia while searching a home associated with the Hells Angels motorcycle gang in the 300 block of East Country Club Boulevard in Big Bear.

Mexico: UAS Used to Drop Explosive Device into Market Parking Lot

On 23 June 2024, at approximately 1800 hours local time, an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) dropped an explosive device that functioned in the parking lot of the Central de Abasto marketplace in Acapulco, Guerrero State. The explosion came after armed men approached merchants in the market and attempted to extort them. No injuries were reported due to the blast. Municipal law enforcement officers responded to the scene and discovered remnants of the device.

Jordan: Explosives Found in Apartment Near U.S. Military Installation

On 22 June 2024, Jordanian police responded to a home in the Marka area northeast of Amman for a report of an explosion, initially believed to have been the result of a gas leak. At the scene, police discovered a cache of explosives stored in an apartment approximately 1 km from the Marka military airport used by the United States and other coalition partners.

Washington: IED Functioned on Vehicle, 1 Arrested

On 5 June 2024, at approximately 0430 hours local time, a 911 caller reported a loud noise near the 1700 block of South Ocosta Street in Westport. Westport Police Department (WPD) officers responded to the scene but were unable to locate the source of the noise. Later that morning, at approximately 1100 hours, Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office (GHSO) deputies were contacted by a man who stated that his pickup truck had been damaged by an explosion, resulting in several shattered windows and the truck bed canopy being blown off.

Texas: Suspect Makes IID in Gas Station, 1 Dead

On 21 May 2024, Austin Police Department officers responded to a gas station in southeast Austin after a 35-year-old man brandished a firearm at employees. A SWAT team was deployed, and upon police attempts to lure the suspect away, he began pouring lighter fluid into a container with a rag to create an improvised incendiary device (IID) described as a Molotov cocktail. According to police, the potential for the device to be used to injure or kill employees prompted an officer to shoot the suspect, who later died at the hospital.

Ohio: HME Functioned at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 8 June 2024, police responded to the 2100 block of Rollingridge Lane in Green Township after a suspect functioned homemade pyrotechnics, damaging a home and truck. The suspect admitted to using a mixture of potassium chlorate and other chemicals purchased online to manufacture the explosive mixture, which he placed in a log. The 18-year-old suspect claimed he was trying to build his own firework. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance and criminal damaging and endangering.

New Jersey: Practice Grenade Functioned, 1 Injured

On 10 June 2024, at approximately 1140 hours local time, Hightstown Police Department (HPD) officers responded to an apartment complex rental office on Westerlea Avenue for a woman suffering from severe stomach pain. At the scene, officers determined that the 39-year-old woman had suffered injuries when an inert training grenade functioned. The woman was transported to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad and Hightstown Fire Department responded.
