Maryland: IIDs Emplaced at Residences

On 12 June 2024, at approximately 0300 hours local time, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 1000 block of Tuscola Avenue and 800 block of Oneida Avenue for reports of attempted arsons at four homes. Sheriff’s deputies requested the assistance of the Fire Marshal’s Office, and investigators discovered four IIDs emplaced at the front doors of the residences. Security footage captured two male suspects emplacing the IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails, before fleeing the scene.

Georgia: IIDs Functioned at 2 Houses, 1 Arrested

On 1 June 2024, at approximately 0545 hours local time, fire crews responded to a home on the 6000 Block of Buckingham Court in Norcross for a reported fire. The home was severely damaged by the fire, which displaced a family of four and seriously injured one man. At the scene, Gwinnett County Fire Investigators discovered improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as gasoline-filled plastic bags and bottles with napkins. That same day, at approximately 0604 hours, fire crews responded to another fire approximately 3 miles away on the 1300 block of Turners Ridge Drive in Norcross.

Colorado: IEDs Discovered Near Dam Spillway

On 6 June 2024, at approximately 1230 hours local time, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) Bomb Squad technicians responded to the Cherry Creek Dam Spillway in Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora for potential explosive devices. At approximately 1400 hours local time, bomb technicians discovered two IEDs. Per a picture from ACSO, one IED was cylindrical in shape and wrapped with red tape on one half and black on the other. The other IED pictured was cylindrical, wrapped in black tape, and capped on both ends. ACSO described the devices as similar in appearance to homemade pyrotechnics.

California: E-Bike Cyclists Function Illegal Pyrotechnics Near Pier, Several Injured

On 8 June 2024, at approximately 2030 hours local time, a group of cyclists on electric bikes (E-bikes) functioned an illegal pyrotechnic on a beach near a lifeguard stand in Hermosa Beach. The cyclists rode away from the area and functioned another pyrotechnic on Pier Avenue before fleeing the scene. The explosion injured several bystanders, and the window of a nearby restaurant was hit as well. The Hermosa Beach Police Department arrested one juvenile in connection with the event.

California: IID Functioned at High School, 2 Arrested

On 5 June 2024, at approximately 0915 hours local time, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Rio Mesa High School after two students functioned an improvised incendiary device (IID) at the school. The students ignited a small aerosol can inside a trashcan, injuring one staff member. The 16-year-old male students were arrested on possession of a destructive device, explosive with intent to injure/intimidate, and arson of property, among other charges.

California: Explosive Device Emplaced Near Roadway, 1 Arrested

On 3 June 2024, at approximately 1630 hours local time, deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious device near the roadway on the 9300 block of Lomita Drive. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail was called to assist with handling the confirmed explosive device, which they rendered safe and removed. Authorities connected a 52-year-old felon to the device, prompting a search of his house. During the search, authorities discovered explosive precursor chemicals (EPCs) and other materials consistent with making explosive devices.

Arizona: Over 70 Pyrotechnic Devices Seized in Two Traffic Stops, 3 Arrested

On 8 June 2024, Mesa Police Department (MPD) officers discovered several boxes with more than 50 illegal pyrotechnics during a vehicle traffic stop. The two occupants of the vehicle, a 47-year-old man and a 22-year-old man, allegedly planned to resell the fireworks in Mesa. They were arrested and charged with possession of illegal fireworks and illegal fireworks for sale. Hours later, MPD officers conducted a separate traffic stop of a 27-year-old male driver and discovered similar boxes of illegal pyrotechnics.

Mexico: Explosive Device Functioned Near Restaurant, 9 Injured

On 9 June 2024, at approximately 1835 hours local time, an explosive device functioned in the El Zócalo town square in Acapulco, Guerrero State. Nine people were injured in the attack. Mexican National Guard personnel and local police responded to the scene. Officials have not yet released incident details, although open source reporting suggests that either unknown person(s) threw an explosive device into the crowded square or an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) dropped an explosive device. No device details have been released. An investigation is ongoing.

Colombia: VBIED Functioned, 6 Injured

In the early morning hours of 12 June 2024, a vehicle borne IED (VBIED), described as a motorcycle bomb, functioned in a mixed commercial and residential area of Jamundí, Department of Valle del Cauca. Six people were injured in the blast, including a police officer from a patrol that was passing by at the time of the attack. The wounded were taken to hospitals, with three of the six suffering from serious injuries. Nearby buildings were also badly damaged by the explosion. No further device details have been released. An investigation is ongoing.
