Germany: BMM Discovered, Tied to Planned Attack

TRIPwire, 25 May 2023 On 23 May 2023, German Federal police in Kempten, Bavaria, arrested a 24-year-old suspect on suspicion of planning to carry out a terror attack on a packed church in Sweden together with his 28-year-old brother, who was arrested on 25 April in Hamburg. During a search of the brothers’ residences, investigators recovered evidence linking the men to the planned attack, including bomb-making material (BMM), and the alleged target on burner cell phones and computers.

Washington: IID Thrown at Vehicle

TRIPwire, 24 May 2023 On 21 May 2023, at approximately 2145 hours local time, Olympia Police Department officers responded to Division Street Northwest after two unidentified suspects threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at a parked vehicle, setting it ablaze before fleeing on foot. Olympia Fire Department crews were called to the scene to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported, and no further device details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

New Jersey: Explosive Device Thrown From Vehicle

TRIPwire, 24 May 2023 On 20 May 2023, at approximately 2130 hours local time, Lakewood Police Department officers responded to Squankum Road after an explosive device, described as a small object with a lit fuse was thrown from a vehicle and functioned in a wooded area. Pedestrians were 50 to 100 feet away, but no injuries were reported. A home security system captured video footage of two pickup trucks traveling on the road before the lit device was tossed from one of the vehicles. The investigation is ongoing.

Pakistan: PBIED Targets Security Checkpoint, 4 Killed

TRIPwire, 24 May 2023 On 24 May 2023, a suicide bomber functioned a person-borne IED (PBIED) during a routine frisking at a security checkpoint in North Waziristan, killing two soldiers, a policeman, and a civilian. The blast also left several civilians injured. No further device details have been released. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the investigation is ongoing.
