New Jersey: IID Thrown at Synagogue

On 29 January 2023, at approximately 0319 hours local time, Bloomfield Police Department officers responded to Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield after a male suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the synagogue’s front door. No further device details were provided, but surveillance footage shows a suspect wearing a ski mask light a glass bottle and throw it at the synagogue. No injuries or damages were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Switzerland: Explosives Used in ATM Attack

On 30 January 2023, at approximately 0205 hours local time, Solothurn police responded after two unidentified suspects used explosives to target an ATM installed in a retail building in Neuendorf. The ATM was destroyed, but no injuries were reported. No further details on the explosives have been released. It is unclear if any cash was stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

Pakistan: PBIED Functioned Inside Mosque, 61 Killed

On 30 January 2023, at approximately 1340 hours local time, a suicide bomber functioned a person-borne IED (PBIED) at a mosque inside a police compound in Peshawar, killing at least 61 people and injuring 157 others. The blast caused the roof and a wall to collapse and trapped victims under the rubble. No further device details have been released. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

UPDATE Spain: BMM Found in Suspect’s Residence

On 27 January 2023, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that police discovered bomb-making material (BMM), described as welding tools, metal elements, and screws in the Miranda de Ebro residence of a 74-year-old male suspect who was arrested on 25 January in connection to sending six IEDs concealed in letters to various government officials, embassies, and a weapons company throughout Spain. The suspect was charged with the manufacture and use of explosive devices for terrorist purposes for the letters sent in November and December 2022.
