Florida: Ordnance Discovered at Residence

On 27 February 2023, at approximately 2020 hours local time, Hialeah Police Department officers responded to a residence on West 54th Street after a man found an object in a tin can that appeared to be a grenade. The tin can, reportedly inherited from a friend that had recently passed away, was examined by authorities, and confirmed to contain a grenade. The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the assist and determined that the device was inert and removed it from the scene for safe disposal.

Canada: Pipe Bomb Discovered Near Fast-Food Restaurant

On 27 February 2023, at approximately 1200 hours, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers responded to a fast-food restaurant in Kelowna, British Columbia, after a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk in front of the building discovered a pipe bomb, described as being eight inches long and two inches wide. The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit responded to assist and determined the device was viable, before rendering it safe onsite. No injuries were reported, and no further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Ecuador: Explosive Devices Functioned Outside Residence and Police Station

On 27 February 2023, local police in Esmeraldas responded to a report of an explosive device that functioned outside a residence on Luis Tello Street in the Las Palmas sector. A second explosion occurred outside the Community Police Unit of Tonsupa in the Atacames Canton. No injuries were reported in either incident, and no further device details have been released. South Africa: BMM Seized from Residence, 2 Arrested

On 26 February 2023, at approximately 1100 hours, Krugersdorp Police Department officers responded to a tip that suspects were selling explosives at a residence on Sivewright Street. When police arrived at the residence, they discovered bomb-making material (BMM), described as seven cap fuse cables, two detonator cords, and four tubes of power gel. No further BMM details have been released. Two suspects, a 43-year-old male and a 48-year-old female, were arrested. The investigation is ongoing.

Pakistan: RCIED Functioned at Bazaar, 5 Killed

On 26 February 2023, local police responded after a radio-controlled IED (RCIED) concealed on a motorcycle was functioned remotely near a crowded area in Rakhni Bazaar in Barkhan, killing five people and injuring 16 others. On 24 February 2023, at approximately 0300 hours local time, local police responded to a residence in IJsselmonde in Rotterdam, after an explosive device was functioned outside the front door, damaging the facade of the house. No injuries were reported. No further device details were released. The incident remains under investigation.
