California: IED Detonated in Vehicle, Killing 1

On 6 September 2024, media reporting indicated that on 2 August 2024, at approximately 2330 hours local time, Bakersfield Police Department (BPD) officers responded to the 600 block of Dolores Street in Bakersfield for reports of an explosion and vehicle fire. Police discovered the remains of an IED that had detonated inside the vehicle. The Kern County Coroner’s Office confirmed the 31-year-old man killed inside the vehicle suffered bomb blast injuries, and his death was ruled an accident. No other injuries were reported. No further information has been released.

California: IED Found at Gas Station

On 6 September 2024, at approximately 1130 hours local time, the Red Bluff Police Department responded after an employee reported discovering a suspicious device at a gas station on South Jackson Street in Red Bluff. The Shasta County Bomb Team was called to assist, determined that the device was an IED, and transported it to the Red Bluff Airport for X-ray analysis. Bomb technicians used a tool to break apart the device and render it safe. No additional details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.

California: BMM and Guns Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 4 September 2024, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Gun Violence Task Force and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered bomb-making material (BMM), including fuses, cylindrical tubing, and several pounds of black powder; four firearms; ammunition; and narcotics while searching a home on the 2200 block of Bailey Avenue in San Jose. Officials obtained a search warrant after developing probable cause that the resident was manufacturing IEDs and firearms.

Italy: Explosive Device Used in ATM Attack

On 10 September 2024, local authorities and bomb disposal technicians responded after unidentified suspects functioned an unspecified explosive device at a bank branch ATM in San Sossio Baronia before fleeing the scene with an unknown amount of cash. The explosion caused extensive damage to both the ATM and the building housing it. The investigation is ongoing.

Greece: IED Functioned Outside Event Venue

On 10 September 2024, at approximately 0000 hours local time, an IED was functioned outside an event venue near Agia Marina in Koropi. The IED was emplaced on a bench outside the venue, and the blast caused significant damage to the venue’s fencing and shattered the windows of two nearby properties. According to the responding police ordnance disposal team, the device included a slow-burning fuse, a detonator, and unidentified explosive materials. The investigation is ongoing.

France: Celebrity’s Home Attacked with IIDs

On 8 September 2024, at approximately 0100 hours local time, two unidentified suspects attacked the Marseille residence of an online celebrity. The suspects used a 12-gauge shotgun to blast open the front door and then threw IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails, into the home, igniting a fire. Local police and fire department crews responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The celebrity and her mother were in the home during the attack and were unharmed. The Marseille public prosecutor’s office is handling the ongoing investigation.

Washington: IED Found after Multiple Explosions Reported

On 30 August 2024, Mason County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to the Star Lake neighborhood in Elma for a report of an explosive device. MCSO deputies determined that the device was a viable IED and learned from community members that three other explosives had been functioned in the neighborhood within the previous 12 hours. Washington State Patrol (WSP) Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and disposed of the device. Authorities determined that an unidentified suspect or suspects had functioned the devices from their vehicle while driving through the area.

Maine: Cannonball Rendered Safe

On 26 August 2024, a Yarmouth resident turned in ammunition and ordnance, described as a live cannonball, to the Yarmouth Police Department. Portland Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit and the Maine State Police Bomb Squad were called to assist, and bomb squad technicians rendered the cannonball safe.

Washington: Grocery Store Destroyed by IID

On 24 August 2024, at approximately 0300 hours local time, multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a grocery store on the 5300 block of 4th street in Renton. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by an unspecified improvised incendiary device (IID) that functioned at the rear of the store. The blaze caused significant damage to the structure of the building and its contents. The investigation is ongoing.

Ohio: Explosive Device Functioned in Parked Car

On 27 August 2024, at approximately 1323 hours local time, Columbus Division of Fire crews and bomb squad technicians responded to reports of an explosion and subsequent fire in a car parked in an alley near a residence on the 2300 block of South 6th Street in Columbus. Officials determined that an explosive device functioned in the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time. Three individuals were initially detained for questioning and released with no charges filed. The ATF and FBI are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
