Kansas: Suspected Explosive Device Discovered While Searching Home, 1 Arrested

On 17 August 2024, at approximately 1000 hours local time, El Dorado Police Department officers discovered an unspecified suspected explosive device while searching a home in the 1100 block of Shelden St. The ATF and Wichita Police Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and removed the device. No further device-related details were provided. The suspect was arrested.

Iowa: Pyrotechnic Devices, Guns, Drugs Discovered While Searching Home, 1 Arrested

On the evening of 16 August 2024, Adair County police officers discovered pyrotechnics with metal projectiles attached to them, drug paraphernalia, illegal firearms, and a hit list targeting local law enforcement officers while searching a home in the 500 block of South Harrison Street in Stuart. The search followed several reports of an unidentified suspect launching explosive devices, described as “hard metal projectiles” attached to pyrotechnics, at a home, causing considerable damage.

California: Pyrotechnics Functioned Outside of Home in Prank Stunt

On 20 August 2024, at approximately 2100 hours local time, an unidentified suspect lit a pyrotechnic device on the road outside a Coronado home while a second suspect rang the doorbell. The device functioned near the resident’s vehicle but did not cause any damage. The resident discovered a large pyrotechnic device in the street and notified the Coronado Police Department. Surveillance video captured the incident. No further details were provided.

California: Explosive Device Functioned in Neighborhood, 1 Arrested

On 11 August 2024, at approximately 0129 hours local time, Merced Police Department (MPD) officers responded to a reported explosion in the 700 block of Sunol Court but could not locate the site of the explosion. After examining video evidence, officers identified the site, as well as the Sacramento residence of a 24-year-old male suspect. MPD Bomb Squad technicians responded to the residence and found additional evidence on the suspect before arresting him. No further device-related details were provided.

United Kingdom: IIDs and Pyrotechnics Thrown at Police During Civil Unrest, 10 Injured

On 10 August 2024, protestors threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), pyrotechnics, and rocks at Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers in Nailors Row in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, after a parade. Video footage captured a crowd, including juveniles functioning and throwing IIDs, described as Molotov cocktails, at police vehicles. At least 10 police officers were injured during the protests, and some residents evacuated their homes. A 46-year-old man was arrested and charged with disorderly behavior. No further information has been released.

Germany: Explosive Device Thrown at Restaurant, 2 Arrested

On 11 August 2024, two suspects shattered a window and threw an unspecified explosive device into a restaurant in Eislingen. The device functioned, injuring two and causing an estimated 50,000 euros worth of damage to the property. Local authorities, with assistance from a helicopter unit, located and arrested the two suspects. The Göppingen Criminal Investigation Department and the Explosives and Incendiary Devices unit of the Stuttgart State Criminal Police Office are leading the investigation.

France: 6 Kilos of Explosives Seized, 1 Arrested

On 13 August 2024, authorities arrested a 46-year-old man following reports that he was in possession of firearms and explosive devices and had made death threats. Authorities searched his home and personal vehicle in Saint-Denis, in the northern Paris suburbs, and discovered six kilograms of unspecified explosives and several firearms, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Glock 27 pistol. The investigation is being handled by the Banditry Repression Brigade of the Ministry of the Interior, the Saint-Denis Police force, and the Bobigny Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Austria: Two ISIS-Affiliates Arrested after Targeting Large Concert in Explosives Plot

On 6 August 2024, a 19-year-old male suspect was arrested by local police in the Lower Austrian town of Ternitz and confessed to an attack plot in which he planned to use edged weapons and function an explosive device in the perimeter of a high-profile concert at Ernst-Happel Stadium in Vienna on 8 or 9 August. The suspect, originally from Northern Macedonia, caught the attention of the police after intelligence revealed his radicalization by the ideologies of the Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaida.

Tennessee: IID Thrown at Residence, 1 Arrested

On 11 August 2024, at approximately 2215 hours local time, Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers responded to a residence on the 1000 block of Kney Street for reports of a fire. The resident reported that their neighbor threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail composed of a lit soda-pop bottle, onto their porch. The IID ignited a blaze that the victim quickly extinguished. MPD officers arrested the 25-year-old female suspect at the scene, and she is facing aggravated arson charges. No further information was released.

Tennessee: Three IEDs Found in Residence During Drug Bust, 1 Arrested

On 7 August 2024, law enforcement officers with the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force served a search warrant at a residence and storage unit in the 200 block of Kenneth Street in Athens. During the search, authorities discovered 3 IEDs; 41 firearms, of which four had been reported stolen; approximately 540 grams of methamphetamine; drug paraphernalia; and more than $40,000 in cash. ATF agents responded to the scene and removed the IEDs. No further device details were released.
