Texas: 2 IEDs Discovered in Home, 1 Arrested

On 25 October 2024, media reporting indicated that on 7 October 2024, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies, Tatum Police Department officers, and Constable Precinct 2 Office constables searched a property on Rusk County Road 2192 in Tatum and discovered two IEDs, described as designed to be hand thrown; firearms; and illegal drugs. The ATF was called to the scene to assist and secured the IEDs. No further details about the devices were released. A 65-year-old male suspect was arrested on 22 October and charged with possession of an IED and possession of a controlled substance.

Oregon: Incendiary Device Functioned in Ballot Box

On 28 October 2024, at approximately 0330 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Central Precinct officers responded to reports of a fire at a ballot box on the 1000 block of Southeast Morrison Street in Portland. The fire was extinguished by security personnel who worked in the area. Responding officers examined the ballot box, determined that the fire was ignited by an incendiary device functioned in the box, and called the PPB’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) for assistance. EDU technicians responded and removed the remnants of the device.

Iowa: Incendiary Device Functioned on Doorstep

On 26 October 2024, at approximately 0915 hours local time, Des Moines Police Department officers responded to a home on East Marion Street in Des Moines after an incendiary device was functioned at the front doorstep, damaging the home’s front door and siding. No injuries were reported. No further device details were released. The investigation is ongoing.

Arkansas: IED Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 27 October 2024, at approximately 1040 hours local time, Arkansas State Police (ASP) troopers conducted a traffic stop and vehicle search on Interstate 40 eastbound in Conway and discovered an IED, described as a CO2 cartridge with a 1-foot-long fuse. Troopers also discovered illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and multiple social security and identification cards. The ASP Bomb Squad, Conway Fire Department bomb technicians, and ATF agents were called to the scene and confirmed the device was functional. The device was transported to a secondary location and rendered safe.

Germany: Man Abandons Bag Containing Explosives in Subway Station

On the afternoon of 30 October 2024, police officers attempted to stop a man for a routine ID check at the Neukölln subway station in Berlin, which caused the man to drop his bag and flee the scene. Authorities examined the bag and determined that it contained explosives, reported by a news media source as triacetone triperoxide (TATP), although the type of explosive was neither confirmed nor denied by law enforcement. The bag was taken to a nearby park and rendered safe via controlled detonation. An investigation is ongoing.

Turkey: Explosive Device Functioned in Attack at Aerospace Firm, 5 Killed, 22 Injured

On 23 October 2024, security teams responded to an aerospace and defense company near Ankara after two attackers functioned an explosive device outside of the building and shot at employees as they entered the building. Five people were killed, including a taxi driver, and 22 others were injured. The male and female assailants were killed by security forces. No further device details have been released. The Kurdistan Workers Party's (PKK) armed wing People’s Defense Forces (HPG) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Australia: BMM Discovered During Investigation, 2 Arrested

On 28 October 2024, Dutton Park Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) investigators, Explosives Ordnance Response Team technicians, Public Safety Response Team (PRST) officers, Tactical Crime Squad officers, and Scientific Section personnel conducted simultaneous searches at properties in Annerley and Burbank as part of an investigation into property damage from pipe bomb explosions in the Annerley suburb in Brisbane, Queensland, on 10 June and 31 August 2024.

Tennessee: Plot to Damage Electric Substation with IED Attached to UAS Foiled, 1 Arrested

On 2 November 2024, federal authorities arrested a 24-year-old man while he was allegedly attempting to target an electric substation in Nashville using an IED attached to an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). According to the U.S. Department of Justice press release, officers arrested the suspect as the UAS was powered on and the IED was armed sitting next to the UAS. In September 2024, the suspect discussed a plan to fly a UAS with an IED attached to it into an electric substation with FBI undercover employees (UCEs).

Michigan: Pipe Bombs Found in Donation Box at Thrift Store

On 6 November 2024, at approximately 1415 hours local time, the Michigan State Police responded to a thrift shop on the 600 block of W. Conway Road in Harbor Springs after a worker found a donation box that contained multiple IEDs. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad and Canine Team responded to the scene and took x-rays of the IEDs, described as pipe bombs. Bomb squad technicians determined that one of the IEDs contained a fuse and powder, and they rendered the device safe. The canine team conducted a sweep of the business and surrounding area and cleared the scene.

Tennessee: Explosive Device Emplaced Under Car

On 3 November 2024, at approximately 1215 hours local time, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to a home on the 400 block of Shadden Road in Tellico Plains following a report about a suspicious device that was found under a vehicle. MCSO deputies identified the device as an explosive device and called the Knox County Bomb Squad for assistance. Bomb squad technicians examined the device and rendered it safe. No injuries were reported. No further device details were provided. The ATF is leading the ongoing investigation.
