California: IED Used in Vehicle Theft, 1 Arrested

On 3 October 2024, Kern County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies responded to reports of a person armed with a shotgun and wearing body armor driving in Ridgecrest. The vehicle was found abandoned with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun and .22-caliber rifle inside. KCSO deputies arrested the suspected driver inside a nearby home. An investigation found that the vehicle was stolen during a carjacking and the suspect had allegedly stolen another vehicle by using an IED. A subsequent search of the suspect’s home uncovered two bottles containing trace amounts of explosive material and ammunition.
